Why do young people sext?
how to avoid crime in hertfordshire policeThere are many reasons young people send sexts.  They might:

  • Feel like 'everyone else is doing it' even if they are not
  • Worry about being seen as 'not sexy' or 'frigid' so go along with it even though they feel uncomfortable
  • Feel under pressure to sext as a way of 'proving' their sexuality
  • Want someone's approval
  • Feel proud of their body and want to share it with others
  • Be in love with the person and trust them completely
  • Feel harassed, threatened or bullied into sending pictures

In 2013 a NSPCC/Childline survey of 450 teenagers from across the country found that 6 out of 10 teenagers said they had been asked for sexual images or videos.  Of those questioned, 40% said they had created a sexual image or video, and a quarter said they had sent one to someone else by text.
