A Stop and Search is when a police officer stops you or your vehicle and searches you, your vehicle, your clothes or anything you are carrying.
Before they can carry out a search officers must have ‘reasonable grounds’ to reasonably suspect that you have been involved in a crime, or that you are likely to be carrying prohibited items such as:
- illegal drugs
- stolen property
- something which could be used to commit a crime, for example a crowbar.
This is not an exhaustive list.
Being subject to a stop and search does not mean you are under arrest or have done anything wrong.
The officer’s suspicion must seem reasonable to an independent observer.
