Gates, fences and hedgestext here

text here We know that a high proportion of burglaries involve burglars gaining access to the rear of the property.

To help prevent this, your side and rear gates should be at least 1.8 metres tall. Topping them with trellises, anti-climb plastic decorative spikes or thorny plants will deter a burglar further. A thorny boundary hedge would work equally well.

Front of house

At the front of the house, your boundaries should be a maximum of one metre – this is so a burglar could be seen from the street. Taller metal railings also allow visibility.

Try not to leave your bin on the outside of your property or near gates and fences – it could be used as a climbing aid.

Gravelled surfaces are noisy and therefore may put off a potential burglar.
