Physical security

Social engineering is not limited to phone calls and the online world; it happens face-to-face too. Criminals also often masquerade as suppliers, such as an IT engineer, utility company representative, or even a bailiff or council officer. All employees are at risk of letting someone untoward into the premises.

Items of physical value are just part of this risk. Sometimes the data or the access granted by stolen devices can be much more valuable than physical goods.

How can I protect our business?

  • Ensure that hard copy documents are kept in locked filing cabinets and shredded when obsolete.
  • Documents should be picked up from printers promptly.
  • Employees should take care of company devices and be aware of basic anti-theft advice.
  • Always make sure that you double-check that anyone wanting to gain access to your premises has legitimate reasons and identification, and establish a policy for arranging visits for guests and outside contractors.
  • If possible, escort all guests around the premises.

If the worst does happen and something is stolen, inform the police and any relevant suppliers immediately. The quicker this is reported, the more likely it is that stolen electronic devices can be blocked before they are used to access data or stolen property recovered.
