What is Stop and Search?

A Stop and Search is when a police officer stops you or your vehicle and searches you, your vehicle, your clothes or anything you are carrying.

Before they can carry out a search officers must have ‘reasonable grounds’ to reasonably suspect that you have been involved in a crime, or that you are likely to be carrying prohibited items such as:
  • illegal drugs
  • weapons
  • stolen property
  • something which could be used to commit a crime, for example a crowbar.

This is not an exhaustive list.

Being subject to a stop and search does not mean you are under arrest or have done anything wrong.

The officer’s suspicion must seem reasonable to an independent observer.
The Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office in Hertfordshire facilitate a Stop and Search Scrutiny Panel through which panel members, all of whom live, work or study in Hertfordshire, meet on a monthly basis to discuss, monitor and scrutinise how Hertfordshire Constabulary are using stop and search powers.  To find out more, or to get involved, please visit the Commissioner’s website.
